The quotes are about how when you are a high ranking person (noble, king, queen, etc), your path is a dangerous one, beause all your enemies are powerful as well.
And probably that those high people also plot and scheme more than others, adding to the danger. We totally see this with the Seanchan royal family, where Tuon always says he siblings try to kill each other to prove they are the strongest and deserve the throne.
The first quote is from a book dating from Artur Hawkwing's day. The second quote is a Seanchan quote. They possibly come from the same source, seeing as the Seanchan Empire was founded by Hawkwing's son and his armies.
We are up in the borderlands for this part. The nations up north along the blight. Check out the map of world leaders, if you still have it!
Don't worry about all the other people that are mentioned here, other than the Kings and Queens.
Bashere is from Saldaea, and he was previously out hunting Mazrim, before they both ended up joining Rand.
These are all the leaders of the Borderland nations off to see Rand. Them and their army will be wandering for many books, and get caught up with Elayne in Andor. They don't end up talking to Rand until book 13.
"If the White Tower would or could not do what had to be done, someone must" - "We'll end dead or in the histories, or both" - "Do what needed to be done. Whatever the price" - it all sounds very dramatic, what they are off to do. They are going to find out whether Rand is capable of facing the Dark One, or whether he is Dark Rand who should be killed. They will use an ancient secret prophecy that they know about to get their answer.
"A pit the dead could not be made to walk" - oh, don't worry, they will. lul
Agelmar Jagad is with the Shienaran's. He is one of the Great Captains who will lead in the Last Battle (and get corrupted by Graendal)
They are able to leave because the Blight is so quiet. That would be because Ishy and friends are starting to gather all the trollocs for mad invasions later.
Tenobia talks about the line of succession for her throne, saying that Bashere is next in line. So when (um, I mean "if" lol) she and Bashere both die, Faile will be Queen.
Lol, they all brough Sedai thinking it would be fine, but now there's 13 of them, just the number to scare Rand out of visiting them.
"Too many rulers to the south had died or vanished" - such as:
King Mattin of Illian - Kidnapped by the White Tower, but we're supposed to think Sammy killed him
King Alsalam - also kidnapped by Sedai, but we're supposed to think Graendal has him
King of Cairhien - killed by Thom lol
Morgase - obvi
Previously - The Tower Sedai that kidnapped Rand are prisoners with the Wise Ones. Several of them were stilled by Rand during his escape from the chest.
The Rebel Sedai that came to help him was made to swear to him. They are also with the Wise Ones, but more like apprentices than prisoners.
Verin was part of that Rebel Sedai group.
Coiren was the leader of the Tower Sedai
Katerine - a Red/Black that was part of the kidnap group.
Seventy-one years had passed since she had last made a serious mistake - probably when was forced to become a Blacky to avoid being killed by them.
Verin wonders where the Wise Ones learned to link. It is assumed that Egwene is teaching them things during their telrod meetings.
"One day she would have to write out the ciphers used in her notebooks" - she will do that, so that she can give Egwene info about Black Ajah.
"The circumstances [of Katerine's escape] made everything plain, to her" - maybe Verin knows Katerine is a Blackie, and therefore knows she was freed by Darkfriends. Or maybe Verin didn't know she was Black, but now does, and can add her to her list of known Blackies.
"The al'Thor boy seems to think he has supporters inside the Tower" - this is probably his idea from a letter Alviarin sent him in book 5. Rand thinks Alviarin leads a group of secret supporters.
So Verin is questioning the prisoner Sedai, supposedly to find out useful info for Rand and the Wise Ones. She is also sneakily doing some mini-compulsion-like thing on them, convincing them that they should follow Rand.
She says that although she can suggest what they are to do, the Sedai "would have to find reasons within herself to obey". So her compulsion is not full-on like Moggy or Graendal do.
We also see at least one Sedai later who has "found her own reasons to obey" Verin's instructions. A Sedai called Elza (who is a Blacky) convinces herself to support Rand because "otherwise how could he face the Dark One and be killed during the Last Battle"
This bit is totally random. lol.
"Only 9 people living even remembered the game" - for those who haven't read before, this is a clue about how many forsaken are alive. It's one more than there should be - because Lanfear has been brough back by now, even though we've not seen her yet.
The Black flecks in his eyes are called "saa" and are a side effect of using the True Power too much.
The "Fisher" has a bandage over his eyes and a wound in his side. Apparently Robert Jordan originally planned Rand to go blind (because he needs even more physical problems lol. And because he doesn't need to be able to physically see when facing Darky outside of time and space).
"It was very hard to lose a game when you played both sides of the board". I don't know what this means lol. It implies he is being a good guy and a bad guy at once. But, nah, just bad.
Previously - the Bowl was found. Mat and the Sedai planned to leave Ebou Dar to get away from Blackies and Gholam.
They are to go to the Kin's farm to use the Bowl. But Olver ran off into the city and Mat went to find him. Then the Seanchan invaded and Mat was squashed by a building.
The girls don't yet know the Seanchan have arrived.
Aan'allein - Aiel name for Lan ("One man" or "a man who is an entire people")
Teslyn and Joline - the Tower Sedai that are also in the palace in Ebou Dar. Send by Elaida to be advisors to the Queen. They don't like Elaida - Elaida also sent them away because she didn't like them either lol
These two don't know about the Bowl and all that stuff.
There are also Sea Folk with the girls, to help use the Bowl. Renaile is their leader. We still don't know what "bargain" they made to get the Sea Folk help.
Knitting Circle - the name of the lead group of the Kin.
Sumeko - Kinswoman that Nynaeve was impressed by because of her healing ability.
Termool - area in the south Aiel Waste, where there is literally no water and noone and nothing lives there. Moo.
In the intro, we heard about the Amayar. These are the people who live on the Sea Folk islands, but are not the Sea Folk, and don't ever go on boats. They have a prophecy related to the giant hand holding a crystal sphere that sticks from the ground on their island.
This is the hand of the female super-angreal, and their prophecy will be fulfilled when Rand and Nynaeve use the angreal to cleanse the taint, causing the sphere to glow.
I have no idea what a "summer ham" is lol. But Elayne has been trying to learn swearing and curse words, so maybe it's some random thing she's learned lol
The "refugee illuminator" they mention is Aludra. She will show up with Mat when he re-appears from under the rubble lol
Aviendha thinks about the way Wise Ones determine who is boss: "How could strength with the power, something you were born with, weigh more heavily than the honour that years could bring". It implies that age is important among Wise Ones - Sorilea always seems to be Boss Wise One. She cannot channel much, but could still be 300-400 years old. If there were any very strong channels among the Wise Ones who lived their full lives, they could even older.
Previously - the girls are off to the Kin's farm. Avi made the gateway, and thought she saw someone watching from a balcony above.
They have Ispan (Blackie who attacked them in the Bowl's house) as prisoner. She was originally part of Liandrin's group who ran from the Tower in book 3 and had the girls sent after them.
Robert Jordan cameo in this chapter.
We have not learned a couple of things about the bargain with the Sea Folk. The Sea Folk get to keep the Bowl after using it, and the Aes Sedai will teach the Sea Folk.
"Senine might have once work more than six earrings, and thicker ones that she did now" - Sea Folk rules are that if you have to give up your position, not matter how high ranking, you must go back and start again. This includes (for example) if you are windfinder to a high ranking Wavemistress or something, and your boss Wavemistress dies. Back to the start for you.
The ter'angreal of a jolly bearded man with books - Robert Jordan putting himself in the books.
"Not strong, but with it she could handle twice as much power as Nynaeve" - one of the only times we ever get an exact numerical indication of how strong angreal's are.
Vandene mentions "Martine Janata", an Aes Sedai who was burned out studying ter'angreal years ago. This is Setalle Anan.
The reason Aviendha is "having trouble with Travelling is because she first worked out how to do it when she ran away from Rand into the igloo adventure. She still has like PTSD or something from doing that lol
Previously - Avi thought she saw a man watching her from a balcony at the palace, so she "unwove" her gateway to cover their tracks.
Sammy had sent Bors and his followers to search for the angreal collection that the girls also looked for.
Mat fought the gholam in the house where the Bowl was, and learned his foxhead medallion could hurt it.
Moridin thinks of "involuntary rings" as something that people in his time had not known how to do. That means "forcing someone to link with you with the power, even if they aren't allowing you to". Specifically, he is talking about a'dam - that is how they work, and why sul'dam have to be able to channel for them to work (they force the sul'dam and damane to link, with the sul'dam in control).
The gholam can feel Moridin's use of the True Power - something "like the one power, but not quite"
Previously, Sammy told Jaichim Bors Carridin not to go after Mat. The gholam here says that "the man who commanded it" wanted Mat dead. So it seems Sammy didn't want Bors to go after Mat because he had his own way of getting rid of Mat.
Gholam also says he has a desire to carry out it's given mission - to hunt down Mat and the girls. So that's why it never gives up for so many books, just constantly chasing down Mat. Kind of like it has some compulsion to follow it's orders built into it.
Previously - the girls are off to the Kin's farm. Avi made the gateway, and thought she saw someone watching from a balcony above, so she unwove it - much to the horror of the Sedai and others with her.
We learned pretty much the full terms of the bargain here. Aes Sedai to teach Windfinders, Windfinders able to come and go from the Tower as they wish, without being recruited in as novices. And they got the Bowl of course.
They are approaching the Kin's farm. The Farm doesn't just have Kinswomen at it, but it's also used as a place for any women to come to get away from things for a while. Many of the women there probably don't even know about Kin and channelling and whatever.
Ispan the Blackie is still a prisoner with them, after she was caught during the fight at the house with the Bowl.
The dagger ter'angreal Avi finds is useful to Rand in the last book. Whoever holds it cannot be seen or sensed by Darky (or something like that). So Rand uses it to scope out Shayol Ghul before going there.
The set-of-jewelery ter'angreal is a collection of little ones that do all sorts of different things. Nynaeve ends up using it for most of the rest of the books, and discovers what several of them do.
The red rod that feels hot - a theory about this one is that's it's a sex-related thing. Elayne later on channels at it, loses consciousness, and no one will tell her what happens while she was blacked out, but they all find it hilarious. I can't remember when this happens.
Previously - the girls got away from Ebou Dar and are now at the Kin's Farm, ready to use the bowl.
After they left, the Seanchan invaded Ebou Dar.
Alise - the head of the Kin's Farm.
Aviendha is having trouble making gateways properly.
They have found a bunch of ter'angreal, and several angreal in the stash they took with them along with the Bowl.
Renaile - leader of the Windfinders that are with the girls. But she is not one of the strongest in the Power.
Before they left Ebou Dar, Mat made a "bargain" with Renaile that she would obey the girls or he would spank her (paraphrased, lol). She agreed to his terms just because he was ta'veren and she couldn't stop herself lol.
All the business with the Sea Folk choosing who would be using the Bowl, in case you didn't follow. Renaile was naming who would be involved, and was naming those who were strongest in the Power, despite the fact that Sea Folk are very strict on rank, and so it was unusal for them to choose that way. The girls were concerned that Renaile would decide to go with rank, even though strength was more important here.
Also, several of those chosen were related to each other, and there was some weird family rivalries going on. As well as one pair being mother/daughter. Whatevs lol.
"It was proven conclusively that one woman cannot form a link with another against her will" - this is not true. An a'dam can force that to happen. That's how they work and how they do what they do.
The Seanchan would have been drawn to the Farm by the giant weaves of power seen in the sky. The main fan of weaves that came out of the Bowl went to the south - probably right over the top of Ebou Dar.
They notice that there are sparks of saidar in the air around the place after using the Bowl. This is some weird side effect of using the Bowl, and it lingers for a long time. In future books, we see/hear of channelers (both male and female) having trouble doing things with the power around this part of the world.
I reckon it happened because the Bowl was not quite used properly - after all, it's been hidden away for thousands of years, so the method to use it could have been mis-remembered over generations. Also evidence is the fact that after they use the Bowl the weather goes totally crazy to the other side (snow and mad winter everywhere), rather than just going back to normal.
Previously - the Bowl has been used, but now the Seanchan are coming!
Alise - the head of the Kin's Farm.
When they first arrived at the Farm, Careanne was not careful enough in covering her Sedai face, and all the Kin at the Farm tried to run.
Elayne had been going through the stuff collected along with the Bowl to find power-related objects.
She also found some angreal that were used to help with the Bowl.
When they came through the gateway from Ebou Dar, Avi "unwove" the gateway so as not to give potential information to their enemies about where they had travelled to.
"My bow is the ordinary sort today" Birgitte says. When Mat blew the Horn at Falme, the Heroes fought the Seanchan. Birgitte was seen firing arrows with some kinds of mad powers that could burn ships down, and stuff. Just because they were the Heroes from telrod they had extra powers.
OMG - Nynaeve and her friggin' hat HAHAHAHA
When making the gateway - "The flows wavered in her grasp, then snapped into place so suddenly she jumped". This is a side effect of the "bits of saidar" they can feel in the air around them, which is itself a side effect of using the Bowl.
"With luck, she could have a solid base [of supporters for the throne] by the time Egwene arrived". I never noticed this before - it was probably Egwene and Elayne's plan to have Elayne in command of Andor when the rebel Sedai arrived there, so they would be allowed to pass freely through Andor unhindered and unquestioned.
Apparently the Seanchan pay gold for people who help capture new damane.
Previously - Elayne unwove her gateway to stop the Seanchan learning to travel. Even though it was kind of too late, since the damane would have seen the gateway itself.
Fortunately, she made it blow up. It killed everything on her side. Did it do the same on the other end of the gateway, at the Farm??
She mentions that High Lady Suroth has come down (to Ebou Dar) from Amadicia. Last we saw Suroth, she was leading the group of Seanchan that attacked and conquered the Fortress of the Light (when Morgase and co were there).
She thinks of the explosion as a "new weapon". This keep the Seanchan on their toes a bit for a while, thinking that Aes Sedai can cause this to happen in battle whenever they want. The "new Aes Sedai weapon" is mentioned a number of times by them in the coming books.
Previously - there were heaps of chapters about the girls and bowl. Time to move on…
…to Perrin.
Check out this useful page that lists all the groups, and the main people that are with Perrin.
They are all in Ghealdan, looking for the Prophet to bring him to Rand.
Also to make contact with Alliandre, Queen of Ghealdan, who sent Rand a letter previously asking for his help.
They are also not too far away (relatively) to where the girls used the Bowl.
When Sammy scattered the Shaido everywhere, Ghealdan was in the area the scattered them to.
Previously - the Seanchan took over the Fortress of the Light, in Amador.
Morgase and friends escaped from there, with the help of Sebban Balwer - Pedron's former secretary and (real) spymaster.
Perrin "recognised the two men" - these are Basel Gill and Lamgwin, who Perrin met in book 1 at the Queen's Blessing (Gill's inn in Caemlyn)
Previously - Perrin rescued Morgase and friends from bandits. But Morgase's identity is being kept secret. She is "Maighdin"
Updated version of "Perrin's Peeps" is here. With Morgase and friends.
Perrin recognises Basel Gill and Lamgwin from his time in Caemlyn in book 1.
Perrin is supposed to be keeping his presence and his mission a secret. A difficult task with such a large army.
He sent Berelain into the town of Bethal to speak to Queen Alliandre.
He could not fail Faile. lolz. Fail FAEEEEEEL
Faile is sending her people into Bethal - she is going to get them to kidnap the Queen so she will join with Perrin if Berelain doesn't succeed lol
Previously - the adventures of Perrin continue.
Basel Gill is to be Faile's "Shambayan" - this is the name of the person who is kind of the "head of the servants" in a palace/fortress - name used in the borderlands. We heard it at the start of book 2 when everyone was in Fal Dara where Fain escaped from the dungeons and stole the horn and dagger.
Balwer's "difficulties" with the Children of the Light are that Pedron died, and Eamon Valda hated him, so kicked him out when Valda took over.
Balwer mentions that Valda rode off with many Whitecloaks to the north before the Seanchan conquered their headquarters. Galad is with that group also.
Aram doesn't want to go talk to Morgase and friends for Perrin. But he even less wants to be around Aiel. The Tinkers and Aiel avoid each other, and Aram still holds that from his past days as one of the Travelling People. They avoid each other because of their shared history - they were both "Aiel" back in the day, but the Tinkers broke away and remained peaceful people. Probably no one knows all this except Aiel who go to Rhuidean, but the habits of avoiding each other would have been passed down through the years.
Seonid "does not like men as men" - gay Sedai.
Previously - the Wise Ones told Perrin that Masema must be killed, not allied with.
Perrin sent Berelain to see Queen Alliandre
Balwer offered Perrin information about the Prophet and Whitecloaks, including that the Prophet was in a town called Abila.
Faile sent some of her people into the town where Queen Alliandre was, after Berelain went there. Her reason for sending them is unknown.
In other news - Rand killed Sammy and was made King of Illian at the end of the last book.
The Seanchan invaded Ebou Dar on the same day that the girls used the Bowl.
Before he died, Sammy scattered the Shaido Aiel across the southern nations. He did it so he could throw some of them in front of Rand's giant army that was coming towards him, but scattered all the rest so it didn't look like it was him doing it just to slow Rand down.
Elyas! Randomly arriving.
Previously - Perrin. Time for a change.
Sammy (aka "Caddar") scattered the Shaido around the southern nations. Sevanna and all the channelling Wise Ones together through one of his gateways and are now in Amadicia.
The Seanchan have conquered Amador (capital of Amadicia, where Whitecloak HQ was)
Sevanna and her close circle of Wise Ones still have the secret that they killed Desaine.
The "Brotherless" is a new Aiel society among the Shaido. This is made up of Aiel who abandoned their original clan and society to follow the Shaido, because they didn't believe (or didn't want to believe) the secret history of the Aiel.
Galina - blacky who was in charge of Rand's kidnap. She escaped from the battle to free Rand, only to be captured by the Shaido.
The man they were questioning at the start said that "hundreds of thousands" of his people were coming across the ocean. The Return.
Apparently (according to online encyclopedia) Sammy's followers found the Oath Rod for him in Ebou Dar in the house with the Bowl. Which means they must have found the room before the girls did, and had been removing stuff from it before the girls got there. Because otherwise Sammy would have been dead before they got a chance to give it to him, and him give it to Sevanna.
Previously - Sammy and Graendal were working together. Sammy is now dead.
She is in Arad Doman - the country Itsy is from.
Moghedien has her soul-in-a-jar (or whatever).
At the start, Graendal is sending a message to Itsy. She is making out it is from the King, and making it look really important by making a story that a Grey Man was trying to stop it being delivered. The messages she sends are random miltary orders for Itsy to follow, just keeping everything in the nation in disorder.
"The girl was stronger in the One Power than she herself!" - yup, Lanfear has lost a bit of power from her time with the snakes and foxes, but not much, and is still stronger than Graendal.
Previously - Cadsuane is in Cairhien. When we last saw her, she was overseeing Rand's recovery from Fain's dagger attack.
Then Rand got up and ran off to fight Sammy.
Arilyn - the Lady whose palace Cadsuane is staying at. This is the same place the Tower Sedai were staying when the kidnapped Rand.
Daigian - one of Cadsuane's Sedai buddies. She is super-weak in the power for a Sedai.
Sorilea - hard-ass olde Wise One that everyone obeys.
It seems that Egwene has been teaching the Wise Ones channelling skills. We previously heard Verin pondering how the Wise Ones learned to link.
"Pity he had not been raised in Far Madding. But then, that might have led to its own catastrophe" - It has never been mentioned in the books, but the city of Far Madding has a ter'angreal that is kept in the council chambers that prevents anyone from channelling within the city.
"One of her dangling hair ornaments, intertwined golden crescents, was cool on her temple" - her ornaments are all ter'angreal that do different things. This one turns cool when someone nearby channels. Kind of like Mat's medallion does, except this one doesn't block the power.
It says that Cadsuane thinks Sorilea might be as old as Cadsuane. Even though Sorilea is only a weak channeler, because she has not taken no Oath Rod, she can still live as long as a super-strong Aes Sedai like Cadsuane.
Cadsuane ponders how Aes Sedai make motions to go with their weaves, just because that's how they learned to do it that way. But the Aiel seem to just be able to stand there and weave with no physical motion. Sounds again like RJ explaining why in the early books, Sedai were always doing motions (like Moiraine in book 1), even though physical movement is nothing to do with weaving.
Cadsuane and Sorilea can see that Rand is on the path to become Dark Rand, and want to stop that.
So the collection of females who know to channel grows. It is now the Rebels, the Wise Ones, and Cads.
Previously - Rand conquered Illian. His giant army was coming to attack, but Rand instead jumped into the city with some asha'man and Bashere's horsemen through a gateway.
In this chapter he is off trying to gather up the men who were fighting against his incoming giant army, on the outskirts of Illian.
The previous King vanished, and people assume he was killed by Sammael.
Min had a viewing that a bunch of Tear High Lords would die in battle. Including Gueyam. Sad face.
When Tam al'Thor left Two Rivers as a young man, it was in Illian where he ended up, and part of the military group known as The Companions.
Lots of nobles here. Some are those that came with Rand's big army (including Weiramon). Some are new Illianers. Don't need to remember the names.
Lews is not talking to Rand. I'm trying to work out if there is a pattern to when he appears and when he doesn't
Rand is starting to see "colours swirling" in his head. This is due to his link to Moridin that happened when they balefired each other's balefire in Shadar Logoth.
"Dashiva, slumped in his gray's saddle like a man who had never seen a horse before" - lol, riding horses is so primitive.
And he speaks fluent Old Tongue. All clues that there is something going on with him. I never noticed these things when I read the first 5 times. lul.
Rand remembers a "nameless [female] darkfriend who had died by his sword near…" - he was probably going to say "near here". He killed her on his way to Tear during book 3.
"The storm do be coming, they say" - this was at the very end of the last book, when the stories spread and people always felt to say "the storm is coming". It's origin is the Seanchan invasion.
Rand has started getting dizzy sometimes when channelling - and this only gets worse over time. It is something to do with his link to Moridin that he recently got (but doesn't know about yet). But I'm not sure exactly the reason for the dizziness. One theory is that if Rand tries to grab saidin while Moridin is also channelling at the same time, it causes it to happen.
Previously - Rand tried to gather the Illian men who were sent by Sammy to fight his incoming army.
He has also learned that the Seanchan are back.
Egwene's Sedai are currently in Murandy, heading north where they will soon reach Andor on their way to Tar Valon
In this chapter, Rand discusses fighting the Seanchan. Here is a map of how the battle will go. Even though the battle doesn't happen yet, the map will help understanding some of the places they are talking about.
The Seanchan think that Elayne's exploding gateway was a weapon. And the area near where the Bowl was used is full of bits of the Power floating around, making it hard to use the Power properly there.
Rand is suspicious of anyone from the Black Tower. Not sure if he has a specific reason, or whether he's just being paranoid about everyone. I guess it's just his general wariness about Taim.
I always want to know what "The Creed" is that Taim makes them say every morning at the Black Tower. Is it a vow to follow Rand? Or just to be loyal to each other within the Tower? Or to Taim? lol
Dashiva looks at his wine as if it is swill lol. He is used to better.
The Black Tower has a 'deserters' list. Taim uses this in the future to try to get rid of asha'man that aren't on his side - he puts them on the deserters list, even if they were sent somewhere by Rand, in the hope that other ashies will kill them.
The Seanchan are moving some of their forces into the mountains between Ebou Dar and Illian. They are doing this to stop any surprise attacks on them from those mountains, when they later march along the main road to take Illian. Rand is going to fight them in the mountains.
Rand says that he asked once for true answers about how to cleanse Saidin, and got a riddle for an answer. And that he has a hint of an answer. He asked the snake-people about it. His "hint" that he has is the wound in his side and the wound from Fain's dagger which seem to be two different types of evil.
The White Tower have known about the Kin since forever, even though they thought they had kept themselves secret.
Nisao- Yellow who was with Myrelle when Lan arrived, and was helping keep his presence (and Myrelle's bond to him) secret. She swore to Egwene when she discovered them.
There are others that have sworn to her as well, including Sheriam and all the others who led the Salidar group at the beginning.
Egwene's dreams:
Rand wearing different masks, and then it was his normal face - maybe to do with him trying to be what he thinks the Dragon Reborn should be, and trying to do a million things at once. And then he decides to just be himself and all is happy again lol
Perrin and a Tinker hacking their way through brambles unaware of the cliff ahead - Perrin and Aram fighting to save Faile, unaware of the Prophet and the problems he will cause. Maybe.
Mat weighing two Aes Sedai on a scale, with something huge depending on his decision - Mat, in book 13 gets a letter from Verin which he can choose to open or not. He decides not to open it in case it interferes with his plan to go rescue Moiraine. But the letter was very imporant too.
Her dreams of Mat are pale and like it's not really him. Probably because he's recovering from the house falling on him.
In other noteds news:
"Halima had an innocent curiosity about everything" - curiosity about everything, sure. Innocent, I don't think so!
The army in their way is a bunch of Morgase-friendly nobles who just want to protect Andor from having a giant army march across their nation. There are peeps from Murrandy there too, as they are currently in that nation.
Egwene is keeping the news secret from the Hall so she can plot with Siuan what to do, and not let the others - especially Romanda and Lelaine - get into her first. Then she sends some of her Sedai off with instructions.
Basically her plan is to let some others assume that she will follow their wishes, but then be BOSS and do what she plans. I don't really get why it has to be secret for now though.
Egwene asks how long Bryne would like to rest his soldiers, if he could. This is part of her plan too.
Previously - an army of Andor and Murrandy nobles and soldiers is ahead of Egwene's peeps. She has arranged a meeting with them, but has not yet told many people - because not telling them is part of her random plan.
A bunch of Aes Sedai have sworn to follow Egwene:
Sheriam and the other original leaders of the Salidar rebels - because Egwene found out about the "ferrets" they sent back to the Tower to try to sway opinions in the Tower.
Myrelle and Nisao - because she found out about them hiding Lan
Theodrin and Faolain - because, I dunno, they wanted to.
Egwene has 3 maids: Chesa, her original one (assigned by Sheriam in the early days). Meri (from Romanda) and Selame (from Lelaine). They are probs all reporting to the other Sedai on what Egwene gets up to lol
Speaking of spies - Egwene got Theodrin and Faolain to spy on Romanda and Lelaine for her
Merilille - Sedai that was in Ebou Dar, now with Elayne and co
Merana - former leader of rebel delegation to Rand. Rand left her in charge of dealing with Sea Folk for him.
Egwene hasn't told anyone of the full events surrounding the use of the Bowl
"None of the Sisters in Ebou Dar had much ability in Cloud-Dancing [manipulating weather], and you can see the result" - hehe, but the Sea Folk were in charge of using the Bowl.
"How could she believe they knew as much of working weather as Aes Sedai?" - yeah, because Sedai are the best at everything lul
"Soldiers moving south out of Kandor" would be the Borderland leaders we saw in the prologue, off to find Rand
"A labourer on the docks claimed he had seen the former King bound and gagged and rolled in a rug, aboard a ship that sailed in the night with the blessings of the captain" - haha this may actually be true, since he was taken by Sedai to go to the White Tower (for his own protection)
First time we find out Sheriam is a Blackie. Well, actually, maybe she's not and she's just being tormented by Shim and forced to give info. But she is lol
Meri and Selame, on the other hand, not tormented, just killed. I assume so that Romanda and Lelaine don't have so much info about Egwene's plans and Shim can better control things via Sheriam.
Oh dear - here is the weird (and really quite irrelevant) thing with the Sitters who are too young. Ready…
Each Ajah has 3 Sitters in the Hall of the Tower. In every Ajah (except Blue and Red) there is are several "unusual" choices for sitters - some are waay younger that usual for someone to become a Sitter, some are people that have held a Sitter position before and now come back for a second stint.
This is true in both the Tower and the Rebels.
What has happened is this:
The Heads of each of the 5 Ajahs (not Red and Blue) are secretly working together to try to heal the Tower, and to gain more influence for themselves.
The heads of each Ajah sent the "unusual" choices to join the Halls with a task of helping heal the split.
If you know who they are exactly, you can see that these Sitters always vote against anything that will open the split further, and vote for things that will help healing the Tower. For example, they all vote against Egwene "declaring war" on Elaida later.
The ones who are unusually young were specifically put into the Halls by the heads of each Ajah to follow their wishes/orders. Thus giving the Heads more influence over things going on.
Partially for helping heal the Tower, and also for general Aes-Sedai-want-more-influence-over-everything reasons lol
Previously - the Sedai are off to meet with the Andor/Murrandy coalition waiting at the Andor border.
Romanda and Lelaine both think Egwene is going to let her speak on behalf of all. She will not.
Bryne told Egwene that if it was possible he would like to rest his soldiers for one month before beginning a seige of Tar Valon.
When Mat went to Ebou Dar, he left Talmanes in charge of the Band. They have been following along with the Sedai.
Elaida sent sisters and Tower Guards to the Black Tower.
Halima's handwriting is like a child. Because she's used to writing Old Tongue (and presumably with different letters) from back in Age of Legends. Or maybe because she's not used to the body she is in. Maybe Balthamel was left-handed and this body doesn't have as good muscles for writing in it's left hand. Hmmm. Theories lol
One of the nobles is called Paitr. This is the same name as the darkfriend kid that was going to help Morgase escape from the Whitecloaks, but got hung. Just coincidence, no relation.
There are "reports of Aes Sedai making their was into Andor in secret" - this will probably be the ones Elaida sent to the Black Tower.
Previously - the Sedai are at a meeting with the Andor/Murrandy nobles.
Egwene promised they would stay for a month, and not trouble anyone after that.
They heard of Sedai and Tower Guards in Andor (from Elaida)
Siuan keeps comparing Egwene to different historical Amyrlin's, telling her to be more like the good ones.
King Roedran is going to use the Band as a "fake enemy" on Murrandy soil to try to unite his nation more behind him.
Egwene thinks that is not a plot that Roedran would be smart enough to come up with himself. Many fans thought he might be Demo in disguise, gathering an army. Even Rand thinks he is Demo later on lol.
Talmanes also says they feel Mat needing them. lol, need to pull the house off him.
Talmanes asks if Egwene is also ta'veren. This was also a sort-of-theory, given some of the things that seem to happen with her. But it's easily disproved by the fact that Nicola and Logain and Siuan can all identify ta'veren on sight, and none of them say she is.
Previously - the Sedai met with the Andor/Murrandy army/nobles
Egwene wants to get everyone moving back to camp quickly so there is no chance for anyone to start harassing her, and possibly ruining her next plan
Siuan thought she saw a pattern among the Sedai chosen as Sitters in the Hall
Gareth told Egwene he would like one month to rest before arriving at Tar Valon, if it was possible
No noteds. Just Egwene pulling another tricky trick on everyone
Previously - Elayne and co travelled to Andor, and Elayne's gateway exploded to escape the Seanchan
They are heading to a manor house on some of Trakand's estates.
Here is a diagram of all the people with this group!
Part of the agreement with the Sea Folk about the bowl is that Aes Sedai will teach the Windfinders
Way long ago - Avi tried to give Rand the sword of King Laman to get rid of her toh to him. But he just took the blade and gave her the hilt back, which was covered in precious gems.
Egwene has previously mentioned that the girls found a way to leave messages for each other in telrod. Which sounds impossible because things in telrod always change and go to how they are in real world. This is explained in this chapter.
They wonder if Black Ajah take their own Oaths to prevent them giving each other away. It is true, here are the 3 Black Ajah Oaths:
1) I shall obey all commands given by those placed above me in service to the Great Lord
2) I shall prepare for the day of the Great Lord's return
3) I shall hold close the secrets of the Black Ajah, unto the hour of my death.
Sea Folk wedding tradition: "Whoever has the right to command in public must obey in private". Since Nynaeve is boss of Lan in public, he gets to do what he wants in private. [insert wolf whistle]
Elayne's mishap with the ter'angreal is the one that some people think is sex-related. Because no one is game to tell Elayne what she got up to when she was affected by it. Also because it looks like a sex-toy lol
How to leave messages for each other in telrod: Write them using the One Power. Don't use the Power to change things in telrod, actually write them using threads of power. The threads remain in place because they aren't actual objects in telrod, and I guess because the Power is a common factor across all worlds. I've never noticed this bit before.
"The first explosion" is a metaphor. There is no real explosion. Just a conflict of personalities. Boring.
Previously - Rand is in Illian. Re-gathering the Illian soldiers that used to report to "Lord Brend".
He has also learned that the Seanchan are back, and sent for more Asha'man to be sent to him.
Torval, Rochaid and Gedwyn are the main ones here, and all 3 are bad ashies.
Here is the map again, for the battle
Rand sometimes feels unwell when he seizes the Power.
In Cairhien, Rand left some of his Sedai to bargain with the Sea Folk on his behalf.
The "Legion of the Dragon" is the name of the army that Bashere created for Rand. It is made up of men who came to the Black Tower, but were found to be unable to channel.
The Defenders of the Stone are starting to think Tear should have a King. There are many different people having this idea at the moment - them, Rand, the White Tower.
There are definitely two groups of asha'man becoming obvious. Those who follow Taim, and those who are Rand's. They are definitely avoiding each other during this chapter if you know who is who.
Narishma went and got Callandor. He says he had trouble because Rand didn't tell him about all the traps he had set. More likely, someone else had gone in and set their own additional traps to try to catch Rand out when he tried to take it again.
The nobles that Rand sends to get are all the ones he doesn't like and don't support him. He's going to use them in this battle, in the hope that some of them die in the fighting lul
Previously - Rand has gathered peeps to fight the Seanchan, to stop them coming across from Ebou Dar to Illian
Eagan Padros - the leader of the men Rand gathered from the outskirts of Illian - the ones who were went out by Lord Brend to defend against Rand's giant incoming army.
Rand says he had "considered doing this [fighting the Seanchan back] by himself". He thinks he could use Callandor and beat them all on his own. In book 12, when he totally loses his shit, he takes the super-angreal and almost attacks them all in Ebou Dar.
Rand wonders how everyone knows of his dislike of women dying for him. After the battle of the kidnapping chest, Rand was wandering around the bodies looking for all the women, so he could add their name to his list. Plenty of people saw him doing that.
The Forerunners - the name of the current invasion force of Seanchan
The Corenne ("Return") - the thousands of people who will come from Seanchan to re-settle here once the forerunners have paved the way.
After using the Bowl, there is something strange in the air around Ebou Dar that makes using the Power difficult.
Also, the Seanchan think Elayne's exploding gateway is an Aes Sedai weapon
The Seanchan think there are "five or six times their number" coming to attack. Actually, it's just them seeing the same groups multiple times in all different locations as they Travel from one place to the next
The battle between Rand and the Seanchan is about to commence.
Go see the map again if you want, but it's really just a battle in the mountains, with the Seanchan trying to make their way east, and Rand trying to fight them back to the West.
The Seanchan have Tarabon, Amadicia and some of Altara, so they have some of those peeps fighting for them.
Eagan Padros tried to assassinate Rand, but failed. And died.
Rand still thinks Mat is with the rebel Sedai and is taking Elayne to Caemlyn.
"Deathwatch Guards" are the personal army (and often bodyguards, but not always) that are owned by the Empress.
Rand has Callandor, but no one except Narishma knows yet.
Channelling near where the Bowl was used (just outside Ebou Dar) is difficult.
Rand wonders what to do with the damane and sul'dam he captures. Since he can't make himself kill them. He will later send them all to Elayne in Caemlyn, and she gets the Kin to look after them - and try to train the damane to be free, and try to convince the sul'dam that they too are able to channel.
Furyk!!
He thinks that the army he is fighting is from Altara (the nation Ebou Dar is captial of). Not sure why. I guess he doesn't expect people from Illian or elsewhere to know or care about them yet.
"They're scattered from one end of the range to the other, too spread out to support each other" - lol, no, just the same people Travelling.
It seems Rand has defeated the Seanchan. But he wants to get rid of them completely, and send them running off into their ships back home again.
Liandrin (former Black Ajah) was punished by Moghedien for trying to attack her, and was left somewhere in Amadicia to be servant for the rest of her life. When the Seanchan came, Suroth recognised Liandrin and took her as her property. They know each other from book 2 when Liandrin tried to deliver the girls to the Seanchan in Falme.
Alwhin - Suroth's "Voice". She is a former sul'dam and found the two leashed sul'dam (Rena and Seta) that the girls left behind when they excaped from Falme. Suroth raised her to this new position, essentially to keep her quiet about the secret that sul'dam can channel too.
The Power is difficult to use and control around Ebou Dar
morat'grolm - Seanchan have people who ride three-eyed grolm lol
Suroth knows people here can Travel, as some Seanchan have seen the girls do it at the Kin's farm. Most were killed by the exploding gateway, but some would have got away (like the raken-riders)
She would also know because she is a darkfriend, and probably gets info abou the world from other Darkfriends
Apparently people feel "awe" when kneeling before the crystal throne. That's because it is a ter'angreal that makes people feel awe.
Rand was almost assassinated. Two ladies, Ailil and Anaiyella, acted suspiciously as he was injured on the ground. Possibly thinking of killing him.
Everyone thinks they've lost. Both will retreat, but the Seanchan will not think of coming further east for a long time.
Rand says with Callandor he can hold "more than ten men could, or a hundred, he did not know how many". So, that's not very helpful for working out how strong angreals are compared to people's power levels.
Rand's mishap with lightning everywhere was partially due to the weirdness of Saidin, but also partially because Callandor has a "flaw" that makes it hard to control when using it yourself. It works best when the man is linked with two women, and they control the weaves.
Previously - Alviarin blackmailed Elaida. She said she would protect Elaida from being kicked out over the bungled kidnapping of Rand, and of sending Sedai to take care of the Black Tower thinking there were only a few men there.
Mesaana taught Alviarin to Travel.
Alivarin made Elaida punish and praise certain Sedai to start turning sisters from different Ajah's against each other.
Elaida went to Seaine to get her to "seek out treason in the Tower", hoping to bring down Alviarin. But Seaine misinterpreted, and is going to hunt Black Ajah.
Elaida had a foretelling that the Tower would be whole again, the Black Tower would face much trouble after Aes Sedai went there, and that the Dragon Reborn would face the Amyrlin and know her anger. And of course, she misinterpreted it to mean all her plans would work out in the end.
High Lord Darlin, Lady Caraline and Lord Toram are the three leaders of the rebel nobles that Rand visited last book.
At the start, they ponder the fact that there cannot be lots of leashes to control channelers, because there are not many copies of the same ter'angreal. And no one knows how to make them.
A'dam were created by an Aes Sedai who lived in Seanchan BEFORE Artur Hawkwing sent his armies across there. Until then, the Seanchan continent had been living its own life since the Breaking, and channellers were the rulers. Presumably they still knew how to make ter'angreal, and one of them offered her new invention to Hawkwing's son when he came to conquer, to help him defeat her own enemies there.
And now Elayne can make them anyway lul
When Alviarin comes in, it says "Velina flinched for some reason". She is a blacky. Presumably she know Alviarin is as well, and that she is a boss blackie.
Elaida adds "of the Light" after "the inevitable triumph" in Alvi's proclamation. At least she still has enough sense to see that. Pity it didn't click that the wording might mean Alvi is a Blackie.
Mesaana says that the Heads of the Ajahs are meeting in secret. I have noted before that they are working together to try to reunite the Tower - by manipulating who are chosen as Sitters in the Hall (remember Siuan noted there were some unusual choices in the Salidar ones)
Elaida went to Seaine to get her to "seek out treason in the Tower", hoping to bring down Alviarin. But Seaine misinterpreted, and is going to hunt Black Ajah. She then recruited Pevara to help.
In the Tower, the Ajah's are starting to turn against each other, thanks to several decrees made by Elaida (or by Alviarin)
The founders of the Salidar rebellion sent a bunch of sisters back to the Tower at the very beginning (the "Ferrets", as Egwene calls them) to try to influence events in the Tower to help bring down Elaida.
Seaine is the main character in this chapter - but then Saerin comes along part way through. Oy vey!
Oh dear - now Saerin and Seaine are working together. Stupid names.
At one point, the "Daughters of Silence" are mentioned. They were a little group of Tower-rejects that tried to start their own group of channellers and gather more to join them. Kind of like the Kin. But they were discovered and shut down.
Toveine is in charge of the Sedai sent to the Black Tower by Elaida.
She still thinks there are only a few men here who can channel, and she will take care of them with the 50 sisters she has with her.
She was one of the sisters involved in illegally gentling men 20-or-so years ago, and was sent away from the Tower as punishment (but their reason for leaving was covered-up as going away for voluntary retreat)
She says there are rumours that the Black Ajah were involved in the illegal-gentling episode somehow. This is true - as part of their hunt for the Dragon Reborn (which began at the same time as Moiraine's, in New Spring, after they found out about the Foretelling of his birth), they got some Red Ajah to start gentling men as quickly as possible, to stop the Dragon Reborn being identified if it was indeed him.
Some Reds continued to do this, even after the Black's wanted to stop, and these are the ones who got caught out.
The Blacks wanted to stop because Ishy came along and told them he wanted Dragon alive, not dead.
What did Logain do to her at the end? He bonded her, but with a bond invented by the Asha'man themselves, which also contains an elament that forces the bonded person to obey.
Why does he kiss her? Because when the Ashies first discovered bonding, it was used on their wives. So I guess whoever invented it could only do it while kissing - so that's how they all learned it lol
Presumably the force-to-obey-bond is different to the one used on wives. Or maybe not lol
Previously - As soon as he was awake from Fain's dagger attack, Rand ran off to fight Sammael, and then the Seanchan.
Fain was hanging out with Lord Toram Riatin, one of the rebel nobles, when Rand went to visit them.
The other main nobles there were High Lord Darlin, and Lady Caraline.
Daved Hanlon, another darkfriend who was in charge of "Gaebril's" armies in Andor was also there.
Before that, he had left Merana and some other Sedai in charge of making a bargain with the Sea Folk.
Rand wanted the Sea Folk to provide him with ships when needed - the rest of the bargain was up to the Sedai to sort out.
Dobraine - is in charge of Cairhien for Rand, now that Berelain has been sent off with Perrin's crew.
While fighting the Seanchan, Rand was suspicious of Lady Ailil and Anaiyella maybe thinking of killing him.
Min has had a viewing that Cadsuane will teach Rand and the asha'man something important.
Min's viewing - Darlin will be King of Tear.
I know having yet another person hanging around (Sea Folk ambassador) would be a bit annoying, but I'm not sure what Rand's issue is with him having to visit the Mistress of the Ships - it's less than once a year.
When they go to visit Cadsuane, Dashiva makes ominous background music lol
Info about Callandor:
It does not have a buffer to stop someone drawing too much of the Power through it. You can theoretically draw as much as you want until it kills you.
It "magnifies the taint" - I've never noticed the importance of this bit before. Callandor can be used to magnify the True Power (Darky's power) as well as saidin. This is probably related to the fact that it "magnifies the taint". Some believe that the taint and the True Power are related to each other.
It is safer to use if linked with two women, one of whom is controlling the flows.
The other important bit of info, which Cads didn't know, is that while using it, you are vulnerable to having a woman link with you against your will and take control.
All of these properties are useful when Rand uses Callandor at the Last Battle.
The quote at the end "you could challenge the Creator" is what Lanfear said to Rand about using the super-angreal.
Previously - Elayne was worried about all the people in her mob getting along, and then a metaphorical "explosion" came.
Naean and Elenia - two Ladies who tried to claim the Lion Throne after Rand left. Dyelin had them arrested. This was only really quickly mentioned previously, but they become important later.
Several nobles that Elayne hopes will support her are the ones down at the border that met with Egwene earlier.
"Elayne was recalling something she had heard this woman say the first time she met her" - Garenia and Setalle Anan recognised each other when Anan first took the girls to the Kin and they had a cryptic conversation about it.
As well as Naean and Elenia, we hear that Arymilla (the silly goose lol) is making a claim. She ends up being Elayne's main rival because she gets Naean and Elenia to support her by rescuing them from imprisonment.
Too many nobles.
Previously - Jaichim Carridin (Bors) was in Ebou Dar, working for Sammael, trying to find the collection of angreal.
Then he saw Mat, and sent some of his people after him (against Sammael's orders)
In earlier books, he was supposed to be finding and killing Rand, and a myrddraal was going to kill a family member each month he failed.
Lady Shiane is a darkfriend that was working for him - the woman Mat recognised at the race-track in Ebou Dar, and who had tried to kill him and Rand in book 1
Daved Hanlon is a Darkfriend who led the army of "Gaebril" (Rahvin) in Andor. He led forces into Cairhien to start a claim for the Throne on behalf of Morgase. Mat's newly-created Band of the Red Hand fought them off. He was last seen hanging out with the rebel nobles that Rand visited.
Falion is a Black Ajah who found the angreal stash in Ebou Dar (working for Moghedien). She was working with Ispan, who was captured by Elayne and co, while Falion herself got away.
Hanlon says his orders came from Moghedien. But remember Moggy now belongs to Moridin, so presumably his orders came from Morry also.
Falion doesn't get killed at the end. They give her to Hanlon as a sex slave, basically.
Previously - Elayne arrived in Caemlyn. And long ago, she wrote Rand two letters, apparently expressing totally different feeling for him.
Verin was questioning the kidnapper Tower Sedai who are now prisoners of the Wise Ones. During her questioning, she was also sneakily using as much Compulsion as she knew, to try to get these Sedai to follow Rand.
She said that she could only implant suggestions in their minds, but the Sedai would have to come up with their own reasons in their own mind to justify why they should do what she said (i.e. to help Rand).
Elza is one of these Sedai, she is a Blacky.
In other news, the Maidens were most unhappy that Rand ran off to battle in Illian and against the Seanchan without them.
Min sees that Beldeine is going to bond as asha'man as a warder and is shocked. But, whatevs, that becomes pretty common later on.
She sees Nesune is going to found a library, and that she will have honours and fame. That never happens in the books, so she must do it after the Last Battle.
Elza's reason for helping Rand is that "You are the Dragon Reborn, you must be there at the Last Battle" - what she doesn't say is "so that the Dark One can defeat him". She thinks more on this later.
Rand believes the Sedai are all doing this because he is ta'veren. Nah, it's because of Verin.
The face Rand sees is not Lews, it is Moridin. He tells Lews "if I die, I will die me" - lol sort of, you will die you, but you will live on a Moridin haha
Ailil and the Windfinder are not plotting in her room when Rand ties them up, they're having a sneaky same-sex relationship.
Mazrim says that Gedwyn, Rochaid, Torval and Kisman are deserters. The first two helped Dashiva try to kill Rand in this chapter - the other two are part of the plot as well, but were not seen by Rand here. Taim has probably named them deserters so Rand does not associate those four as being Taim's men. I think Dashiva (Osan'gar) led them without Taim's knowledge.
This chapter is called "Beginnings" - oh yes, it is the beginning. But the end is so far away lol
Previously - the Prophet is in a town called Abila. Perrin was heading there to see the man.
Elyas arrived. He told Perrin that Saldaean women like to be yelled at.
Hari - random bandit working for the Prophet that led the group Perrin rescued Morgase and co from.
The Shaido are scattered all around the southern nations, including near where Perrin is.
"Aram stood gazing at Masema with his mouth open" - Aram is immediately enthralled by the Prophet, and slowly goes to follow him over the next few books.
Masema smells "grim" - guess he knows he's finally been caught out and Rand will obvi not be happy with him
Previously - the Rebel Sedai were to rest where they were for a month, then Travel to Tar Valon. We now see them on the day that the month is up.
Egwene took full command of the Sedai (and ordered them to Travel after a month) by declaring War on Elaida - which the law says the Amyrlin must be in command of.
Two of Egwene's maids, Meri and Selame, were murdered by Shim.
The Grandma novice Sharina appears for the first time. She has the potential to be the maximum possible strength in the power for a female.
